Name change in PAN card in Karnataka: correction through the Protean and UTIITSL portals, with Aadhaar updated first

💡 Before updating your PAN card name, you need a Gazette notification. Get your Gazette name change in Karnataka first →

Last updated: | Reading time: 11 minutes

Quick Answer

To change your name on a PAN card in Karnataka, visit the NSDL portal (tin-nsdl.com) or UTIITSL portal, select "Changes or Correction in Existing PAN Data," fill the form with your updated name, upload your Gazette notification (for legal name changes) or supporting documents (for spelling corrections), pay the fee of Rs 110, and submit. For legal name changes, you must first obtain a Gazette notification from the Karnataka e-Gazette portal (erajyapatra.karnataka.gov.in) — this takes 25-45 days. The PAN card is delivered within 15-30 days after successful application.

Key Takeaways

What You Must Know Before You Start

NSDL or UTIITSL — Both Valid

Both portals are government-authorized for PAN corrections. NSDL is more widely used. Both charge Rs 110.

Gazette is Mandatory for Legal Changes

For marriage-related surname changes, full name changes, or any change beyond minor spelling errors, Gazette is mandatory.

Spelling Corrections Don't Need Gazette

If it's just a typo or minor spelling error, you can apply directly with Aadhaar or existing PAN showing the correct spelling.

Fee is Rs 110

The PAN correction fee is Rs 110 for Indian address. This is paid online during application.

PAN Number Stays the Same

Your PAN number never changes. Only your name and other details are updated on the existing PAN record.

Delivery Takes 15-30 Days

After successful online submission, your updated PAN card arrives by post within 15-30 days.

Aadhaar e-KYC Speeds Up Process

If your Aadhaar has the correct name, using Aadhaar e-KYC for verification speeds up processing significantly.

Why Update

Why Your PAN Card Name Must Match Your Legal Name

What an outdated PAN card name causes
ProblemWhat Happens
Income Tax return rejectionITR filing fails when PAN name doesn't match bank records
TDS mismatchForm 26AS shows TDS credits under wrong name — refunds delayed
Bank account linkingPAN-Aadhaar linking fails, bank accounts get frozen
Loan applicationsBanks reject home, personal, or business loans
Investment issuesMutual funds, stocks, and FDs face KYC rejection
Property transactionsProperty registration and stamp duty payments get blocked

Legal requirement: Under Section 139A of the Income Tax Act, your PAN must reflect your current legal name for all financial transactions.

The number that makes this real

What an Inoperative PAN Actually Costs You

Every guide says “keep your PAN and Aadhaar matched”. None of them tell you what happens if you do not, which is the only part that changes behaviour.

A PAN that does not reconcile with Aadhaar can be rendered inoperative under Rule 114AAA of the Income Tax Rules 1962. That is not a warning label — it has four specific consequences, and they are financial.

Consequences of an inoperative PAN under Rule 114AAA
ConsequenceThe provisionWhat it means in money
Tax deducted at source at a higher rateSection 206AADeduction at the highest of the specified rate, the rate in force, or 20 per cent. On salary, interest and professional income that is a large, immediate cut.
Tax collected at source at a higher rateSection 206CCThe same principle applied to collections, on transactions where TCS applies.
No refund is madeRule 114AAAAny refund otherwise due is not issued while the PAN remains inoperative.
No interest on the withheld refundRule 114AAAYou do not earn interest for the period your money is held back.

There is relief, but it is not for you. CBDT Circular No. 9/2025 relieves deductors and collectors of the higher-rate liability where the PAN is made operative within a specified window. It protects the employer or bank that deducted at the ordinary rate. It does not undo the position for the person whose PAN was inoperative. The burden of fixing it is yours.

Why this belongs on a name-change page. The most common route to an inoperative PAN is not neglect — it is a name that stopped matching. You changed your name on one record and not the other, or you changed both but spelled them differently. That is why the order matters so much: Aadhaar first, then PAN, so the two never diverge in the first place.

Set your mind at rest

Your PAN Number Does Not Change

This is the question people are quietly worried about and rarely ask. A name correction changes the name recorded against your PAN. The ten-character PAN itself stays exactly the same, for life.

  • Nothing you have linked breaks. Bank accounts, demat accounts, mutual fund folios, EPFO, your employer’s payroll and every past return remain tied to the same PAN.
  • Your filing history is untouched. Previous returns, Form 26AS and the Annual Information Statement continue to reflect the same PAN, so nothing is orphaned.
  • You do not surrender the old card. There is no old PAN to give up, because there is no new PAN. You simply receive a card carrying the corrected name.
  • Holding two PANs is a different matter entirely and is an offence. If you have ever been issued a second PAN in error, surrender it — that is a separate application from a name correction.

Contrast this with a passport, where a reissue genuinely does produce a new booklet with a new number. PAN behaves the other way round, and knowing that removes most of the anxiety about starting the process.

Which portal

Protean (NSDL) or UTIITSL — Does It Matter?

Guides tell you both exist and that they are equivalent. Both statements are true, and neither helps you choose.

Both are authorised by the Income Tax Department, both produce the same PAN, and the card that arrives is equally valid whichever you use. The practical differences are small but real.

Choosing between the Protean and UTIITSL portals for a PAN correction
If this applies to youPractical guidance
Your PAN was originally issued through one of themUse the same one. Your existing record sits there and the correction is the smoothest.
You do not know or remember whichEither is fine. Pick one and stay with it for the whole application.
One portal is down or an upload keeps failingSwitching is legitimate. Do not run two applications at once.
You have already filed and it is in progressDo not file a second application on the other portal. Duplicate requests confuse the record and slow both down.

e-PAN or a physical card?

Avoid Rejection

Common Mistakes That Get PAN Applications Rejected

No Gazette for Legal Changes

The most common mistake. Marriage-related or full name changes require Gazette notification.

Name Mismatch Across Documents

If your name differs between Aadhaar, Gazette, and application, the system flags it.

Blurry or Unclear Documents

Low-resolution scans get rejected. Ensure all uploads are clear and legible.

Incomplete Newspaper Pages

Many departments need full original pages, not just the ad clipping.

Wrong Proof Documents

Using a document not on the approved list causes rejection. Stick to Aadhaar, passport, or voter ID.

Mobile Number Mismatch

The mobile number on your application must match your Aadhaar for e-KYC verification.

Which portal is better for PAN name change — NSDL or UTIITSL?
Both are government-authorized. NSDL (tin-nsdl.com) is more widely used and has better tracking. UTIITSL is equally valid. Both charge Rs 110.
How to get Gazette notification for name change in Karnataka?

Will I get a new PAN number after name change?
No — your PAN number remains the same. Only your name and other details are updated. You receive a revised PAN card with the same PAN number.
Can I update PAN name using Aadhaar e-KYC?
Yes, if your Aadhaar already has the correct name, you can use Aadhaar e-KYC for online verification during PAN correction. This speeds up processing significantly.
What if my PAN name change application is rejected?
Check the rejection reason on the portal. Common reasons: document mismatch, unclear scans, or missing Gazette. Correct and reapply using the same acknowledgement number where possible.
Does my PAN number change when the name is corrected?
No. The ten-character PAN is permanent. Only the name recorded against it changes. Bank accounts, demat accounts, mutual fund folios, EPFO and every past return stay tied to the same PAN, and your filing history is untouched.
What happens if my PAN and Aadhaar names do not match?
Your PAN can be rendered inoperative under Rule 114AAA of the Income Tax Rules 1962. Four things follow: tax deducted at the higher of the specified rate, the rate in force or 20 per cent under section 206AA; higher collection under section 206CC; no refund issued; and no interest on the refund being withheld.
How much higher is the TDS under section 206AA?
Deduction is at the highest of the specified rate, the rate in force, or 20 per cent. On salary, bank interest and professional income that is a large and immediate cut, and it continues until the PAN is made operative again.
Is there any relief if my PAN has gone inoperative?
CBDT Circular No. 9/2025 relieves deductors and collectors of the higher-rate liability where the PAN is made operative within a specified window. It protects the employer or bank that deducted at the ordinary rate, not the person whose PAN was inoperative. Fixing it remains your responsibility.
Should I correct Aadhaar or PAN first?
Aadhaar first, always. The PAN portal reconciles against Aadhaar, so filing PAN first means the correction bounces and you pay the fee a second time. It is also the commonest route to an inoperative PAN.
Protean (NSDL) or UTIITSL — which should I use?
Both are authorised, both produce the same PAN and the card is equally valid. Use whichever portal originally issued your PAN if you know which it was, because your record sits there. If you do not know, pick one and stay with it for the whole application.
Can I file on both portals to speed things up?
No. Duplicate applications confuse the record and slow both down. If one portal is genuinely down or an upload keeps failing, switching is legitimate — but do not run two live applications at once.
Is an e-PAN as valid as a physical card?
Yes. A digitally signed e-PAN is fully valid wherever a PAN is required. It costs roughly Rs 70 to Rs 75 against about Rs 105 to Rs 110 for a physical card, and it arrives faster because there is no dispatch to wait for.
Should I pay extra for the physical card?
Only if you need one in hand for a counter that insists on seeing a card. For everything digital — filing, KYC, bank and broker records — the e-PAN does the job.
Do I need a Gazette to correct my PAN after marriage?
No. A marriage certificate is accepted proof for a married surname. A Gazette is needed for a genuinely new name, for records that already disagree, or where a degree, property record or visa file is in scope. We sell Gazette filings, so please weigh that as you read it.
Can I hold two PAN cards?
No, and it is an offence. If a second PAN was ever issued to you in error, surrender it. That is a separate application from a name correction and should not be left undone.
What counts as a name matching my proof document?
Character for character, including initials, word order and spacing. R Kumar and Ramesh Kumar are different strings, and so are Kumar Ramesh and Ramesh Kumar. Read the name off your proof aloud and type it rather than typing from memory.
Why was my PAN correction rejected?
Most often a name that does not match the proof character for character, or a blurred, cropped or angled upload. Expired or unaccepted proof documents and an Aadhaar mismatch account for nearly all the rest.
Can someone else file the correction for me?
For a routine correction, yes, with your documents and authorisation. What you should not do is let anyone file it in a way that puts their contact details on your record — the acknowledgement and any follow-up should come to you.
How long does a PAN correction take?
Commonly one to three weeks for the record to update, with physical dispatch adding postal time on top. Track it with the acknowledgement number rather than filing again.

More Questions About PAN Card Name Change in Karnataka

Can I change PAN name and address together?
Yes — NSDL and UTIITSL allow you to update multiple details (name, address, date of birth, photograph) in a single application. Select all applicable checkboxes when filling the correction form.
What if my PAN card is lost and I need a name change?
First apply for a duplicate PAN card with your existing details. Once received, apply for name correction. Alternatively, you can apply for both duplicate and correction together on NSDL.
Can NRIs change their PAN card name from Karnataka?
Yes — NRIs can apply for PAN name change through NSDL or UTIITSL from abroad. Use your foreign address and submit Gazette notification, passport, and overseas address proof. Fee for foreign address: Rs 1,011.
Is there a deadline to update PAN name after marriage?
No strict deadline, but delaying can cause ITR filing issues, TDS mismatches, and bank KYC problems. It's recommended to update within 3-6 months of your name change.
Can I use my updated PAN for ITR filing immediately?
Yes — once your PAN name is updated in the Income Tax database (usually within 7-14 days of PAN card delivery), you can file ITR with your new name. Link your updated PAN with your bank accounts for seamless TDS credits.
What is the difference between PAN correction and PAN reprint?
PAN correction changes your details (name, address, etc.) and issues a new card. PAN reprint only reprints the same card with existing details. For name changes, you need correction, not reprint.
Does my PAN number change when I correct the name?
No. The ten-character PAN stays the same for life. Only the name recorded against it changes. Bank accounts, demat accounts, mutual fund folios, EPFO and every past return remain tied to the same PAN, and your filing history is untouched.
What happens if my PAN and Aadhaar names never match?
Your PAN can be rendered inoperative under Rule 114AAA of the Income Tax Rules 1962. The consequences are financial: tax deducted at source at the higher of the specified rate, the rate in force or 20 per cent under section 206AA; higher collection under section 206CC; no refund issued; and no interest on the refund being withheld.
Is there any relief if my PAN went inoperative?

It does not undo the position for the person whose PAN was inoperative, so the burden of fixing it remains yours.
Should I use Protean (NSDL) or UTIITSL?
Both are authorised, both produce the same PAN, and the card is equally valid either way. Use whichever portal originally issued your PAN if you know it, because your record sits there. If you do not know, pick one and stay with it — do not run applications on both at once.
Is an e-PAN as good as a physical card?
Yes. A digitally signed e-PAN is fully valid wherever a PAN is required, and it costs roughly Rs 70 to Rs 75 against about Rs 105 to Rs 110 for a physical card, with no dispatch wait. Pay for the card only if you need one in hand for a counter that insists on seeing it.
Should I update Aadhaar or PAN first?
Aadhaar first, always. The PAN portal reconciles against Aadhaar, so filing PAN first means the correction bounces and you pay the fee twice. It is also the most common route to an inoperative PAN in the first place.
Do I need a Gazette to correct my PAN after marriage?
No. A marriage certificate is accepted proof for a married surname on PAN. A Gazette is needed for a genuinely new name, for records that already disagree, or where a degree, property record or visa file is also in scope. We sell Gazette filings, so please take that in the spirit it is written.
Can I hold two PAN cards?
No, and it is an offence. If a second PAN was ever issued to you in error, surrender it — that is a separate application from a name correction, and it should be done rather than ignored.
