Change or correct the name on your Aadhaar from anywhere in Karnataka. Online through myAadhaar or at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. For most cases, like a spelling fix or a marriage surname, you do not even need a gazette.
Fill this quick form. We reply with your exact document list and a fixed quote.
To change your name in Aadhaar in Karnataka, log in to myAadhaar with your registered mobile and file a demographic update with one valid proof of identity in the new name, or visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra if biometric confirmation is asked for. The fee is about Rs 50. A marriage certificate is enough for a married surname and no gazette is needed. It takes roughly 7 to 30 days. The one rule that catches people out: UIDAI permits a name change only twice in a lifetime, and once both are used you need a Regional Office exception request, where a gazette does become necessary.
Checked against UIDAI in August 2026. Fees and windows change, so confirm on myAadhaar before you pay.
Changing the name on your Aadhaar is usually simpler than people expect, and for most cases you do not need a gazette at all. Whether you are adding a spouse’s surname after marriage, fixing a spelling error, or aligning Aadhaar with a legal name change, the update is done either online through the myAadhaar portal or in person at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. We sell gazette filings, so please read that in the spirit it is written.
Online on myAadhaar if your mobile is linked, or at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
A passport, PAN, voter ID, or a marriage certificate after marriage.
Confirm by OTP or biometrics, then track with your Update Request Number.
How to Name Change in Aadhaar Card in Karnataka | Aadhaar card correction 2026
For most people in Karnataka, the online route is the quickest, as long as your mobile number is linked to Aadhaar.
Open the myAadhaar portal and log in with your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your registered mobile.
Select the name update option under demographic details.
Type your name exactly as it should appear, matching your proof of identity.
Upload a clear scan of a valid proof of identity in the correct name, then pay the update fee.
Submit and note your Update Request Number to track the status. The portal confirms each step by OTP, which is why the registered mobile matters.
UIDAI accepts a range of documents as proof of identity, as long as the document shows the name you want on Aadhaar.
| Your reason | Use this proof | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| Spelling error or a wrong initial | Any existing valid photo ID that already carries the correct spelling — passport, PAN, voter ID or driving licence | No |
| Surname change after marriage | Marriage certificate | No |
| Reverting to a maiden name after divorce | Divorce decree, or a document already in the maiden name | No |
| Expanding initials into a full name | A school certificate, passport or other ID showing the expanded form | No, if a document already shows it |
| Adopting a genuinely new name | Gazette notification | Yes |
| You have no document in the new name at all | A certificate of identity from a gazetted officer on UIDAI’s standard format, where accepted | Depends on the change |
| Adoption | Adoption certificate | No |
| Both name changes already used | Regional Office exception request — gazette required at this stage | Yes |
The one rule that matters: the name on your chosen document must match the name you type, letter for letter. The portal and the centre both check it character by character, and a single extra space or a missing initial is a rejection.
Almost every rejection we see comes down to this, and almost no guide explains it. “Matching” is stricter than it sounds.
| On your document | What you typed | Result |
|---|---|---|
| PRIYA R | Priya Ramesh | Rejected. The initial and the expanded surname are not the same string. |
| Priya Ramesh Kumar | Priya R Kumar | Rejected, for the same reason in reverse. |
| Priya Sharma (two spaces) | Priya Sharma | Often rejected. Extra whitespace counts. |
| Priya Sharma | PRIYA SHARMA | Usually fine. Case is generally not the problem. |
| Sharma Priya (surname first) | Priya Sharma | Rejected. Word order matters. |
| Priya Sharma | Priya Sharma (with a trailing full stop) | Rejected. Punctuation counts. |
What to do: open your proof document, read the name aloud character by character including spaces and initials, then type it. Do not type it from memory and do not tidy it up. If the document itself is wrong, correct that document first — not Aadhaar.
This is where a lot of people are misled. For a normal Aadhaar name update, you do not need a gazette.
So the gazette is tied to the size of the change, not to Aadhaar itself. If a service pushes a gazette for a simple correction, ask more questions. For a spelling issue, see our name spelling correction in Karnataka guide.
UIDAI permits a name change twice in a lifetime. Date of birth may be changed once, and gender once. A one-letter spelling correction consumes an update exactly the same as a full change of name, which is why casual edits are expensive in a way that has nothing to do with the Rs 50.
Before you file anything: decide your final name. Not the name for now, the name for the rest of your life. If you are getting married soon, or a gazette is in progress, wait and make one change rather than two.
This is not the end of the road, but it is a different process and very few guides describe it accurately. UIDAI runs an exception handling process through its Regional Offices, governed by a published Standard Operating Procedure for name and gender updates.
This is the one Aadhaar case where a gazette is genuinely required. Not for a spelling fix, not for a married surname — but once both of your lifetime name changes are gone, UIDAI wants the strongest available proof, and a gazette notification is what that means. We sell gazette filings and we still think you should avoid ever reaching this point. See our gazette name change in Karnataka guide if you are already here.
Your Aadhaar letter carries your name twice: once in English and once in the regional language, which for most Karnataka residents is Kannada. Both versions are part of your record, and both are what other systems read when they verify you.
This matters more than people realise. A transliteration between Kannada and English is not mechanical — the same Kannada spelling can be written several defensible ways in English, and vice versa. If only the English line is corrected and the Kannada line still carries the old form, you can pass one verification and fail another. When you file the update, check that both lines show the corrected name before you accept the acknowledgement, and check both again on the downloaded Aadhaar once the update is approved.
If you moved to Karnataka from another state: your Aadhaar may still carry the regional language of the state where you enrolled. That is normal and is not itself an error. It only needs attention if the name in that language is wrong.
After marriage, a woman adding or changing to her spouse's surname updates Aadhaar with a marriage certificate as the proof of identity. You can do this online through myAadhaar if your mobile is linked, or at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. A gazette is not required for a marriage surname change. Once Aadhaar shows the new surname, updating PAN, bank, and passport becomes smoother, since each can reference the corrected Aadhaar. For a full surname change, see our surname change in Karnataka guide.
A child’s Aadhaar works differently in two ways worth knowing before you file.
A child’s two-change limit works exactly the same way, and it is easy to burn through it early with school-driven spelling corrections. Decide the spelling the child will carry into their SSLC and beyond, then change it once. For a full legal change to a child’s name, see our guides on the process for changing a child’s name in Karnataka and the documents required for a minor’s name change.
Both routes work across Karnataka, but they are not interchangeable in every case.
A name change often needs biometric verification at the centre, so be prepared to visit even if you start online. Karnataka has Aadhaar Seva Kendras and enrolment centres in Bangalore and across the state.
| What you are doing | Where | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Name change (demographic update) | myAadhaar or Aadhaar Seva Kendra | About Rs 50 |
| Re-uploading proof documents (document update) | myAadhaar | Free during UIDAI’s current window |
| Biometric update | Aadhaar Seva Kendra only | About Rs 125 |
| Mandatory biometric update at age 5 or 15 | Aadhaar Seva Kendra | Free |
| PVC card reprint | myAadhaar | About Rs 50 |
| Downloading your e-Aadhaar | myAadhaar | Free |
Do not confuse the two free-sounding things. UIDAI’s free window applies to a document update — re-uploading your proof of identity and proof of address so the record is refreshed. Changing your actual name is a demographic update and carries the fee. Confirm the current position on myAadhaar before you assume either way.
Commonly 7 to 30 days after submission, and often inside a fortnight. Track it with your Update Request Number and download the updated Aadhaar once it is approved.
Twice in a lifetime for a name, once for date of birth, once for gender. A one-letter spelling fix uses one of the two, so decide your final name before you file.
A name change frequently triggers biometric confirmation at a centre even when you start online, so plan for one visit.
None from UIDAI. The real cost of getting it wrong is the wasted lifetime change, not the Rs 50.
Rejections are common and almost always fixable. What matters is reading the reason correctly, because the fix is different in each case — and because a rejection for the wrong reason can cost you one of your two lifetime changes.
| Reason given | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Name mismatch with the document | What you typed does not match your proof character for character | Re-file with the name copied exactly from the document, including initials and spacing |
| Document not legible | The scan is blurred, cropped, angled or shadowed | Re-scan flat, all four corners in frame, readable at full size |
| Invalid document | The proof is not on UIDAI’s accepted list, or it has expired | Choose a different proof from the accepted list |
| Limit exceeded | Both lifetime name changes are already used | The Regional Office exception route, which needs a gazette |
| Biometric verification required | The change is substantive enough that UIDAI wants you in person | Book an Aadhaar Seva Kendra appointment and carry the originals |
| Mobile not linked | The OTP could not reach a registered number | Link your mobile at a centre first, then re-file |
Aadhaar sits at the base of your identity records, so a change here should flow through to the rest. Once your Aadhaar shows the new name, update PAN next, then your bank and KYC, then passport, voter ID, driving licence, insurance, and employer records. Carry your proof of change for each. Aligning Aadhaar first, then PAN and passport, is what stops a mismatch from blocking a visa, a loan, or a job verification later. For the passport step, see our name change in passport in Karnataka guide.
Name does not match the document, even by a single letter or an extra initial.
Trying the online route without a mobile number linked to Aadhaar.
Uploading a blurry or cropped scan of the document.
Getting a gazette for a simple correction or marriage change that did not need one.
Repeated small edits that hit the twice-in-a-lifetime limit.
Not updating PAN and passport afterward, so records still clash.

We handle Aadhaar name changes across Karnataka every week, so we know exactly which route your case needs. We tell you honestly whether you even need a gazette, we check that your documents match so nothing gets rejected, and we keep your PAN and passport aligned so your records finally agree.
How do I change my name in Aadhaar online? Log in to myAadhaar with your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your registered mobile, open the name update under demographic details, type the new name exactly as it appears on your proof, upload a clear scan of that proof, pay about Rs 50 and note the Update Request Number.
How much does an Aadhaar name change cost? About Rs 50, whether you file online on myAadhaar or at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. A biometric update, if one is needed, is around Rs 125. Re-uploading proof documents is a separate free service and is not the same as changing your name.
How many times can I change my name on Aadhaar? Twice in a lifetime. Date of birth may be changed once and gender once. A one-letter spelling correction uses one of your two, which is why casual edits are worth avoiding.
What if I have already changed my name twice? Your next request will be rejected as limit exceeded. UIDAI then runs an exception process through its Regional Offices: call 1947 or use the grievance channel, quote the enrolment number from the rejected request, and supply a gazette notification along with a photo-bearing proof in the old name. Approval is not automatic.
Is a gazette needed for an Aadhaar name change? Not for a spelling correction, a married surname or a post-divorce reversion. It is needed for a genuinely new name, and it is required for the Regional Office exception route once both lifetime changes are used.
How long does an Aadhaar name change take? Commonly 7 to 30 days from submission, and often inside a fortnight. Track it with the Update Request Number on myAadhaar rather than re-filing.
Which documents does UIDAI accept for a name change? A valid passport, PAN card, voter ID, driving licence, a service photo identity card from a recognised employer, a marriage certificate for a married surname, a divorce decree for a reversion, and a gazette notification for a full legal change.
Can I change my Aadhaar name without any document? Not simply on request. Where you hold no document in the new name, UIDAI’s standard certificate of identity signed by a gazetted officer is accepted in some circumstances. For a genuinely new name a gazette remains the clean route.
Do I need to visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra? Often, yes. A name change frequently triggers biometric confirmation even when you start online, and a centre visit is unavoidable if your mobile number is not linked to Aadhaar.
Can I change my Aadhaar name after marriage without a gazette? Yes. A marriage certificate is accepted proof for a married surname. If a service insists you need a gazette for this, ask them which UIDAI rule they are relying on.
Why was my Aadhaar update rejected? Most often because the name you typed does not match your proof character for character, or because the scan was blurred, cropped or angled. Invalid documents, an unlinked mobile and the two-change limit make up nearly all of the rest.
Does my Aadhaar name have to match my PAN? In practice, yes. A PAN that does not reconcile with Aadhaar can be treated as inoperative, which pushes tax deducted at source to twenty per cent under section 206AA and stalls refunds. Update Aadhaar first, then PAN.
Aadhaar card name change online — myAadhaar, demographic update, about Rs 50, one valid proof of identity in the new name, 7 to 30 days.
Aadhaar name correction after marriage — marriage certificate as proof, no gazette. Do this before PAN so the two never diverge. See our Aadhaar name change after marriage guide.
Aadhaar name change limit — twice in a lifetime for a name, once each for date of birth and gender. A spelling fix counts as one.
Aadhaar update status check — use your Update Request Number on the enrolment and update status page on myAadhaar. Call 1947 if the status is unclear.
Aadhaar Seva Kendra Bangalore appointment — book through myAadhaar. Carry your originals and a self-attested copy of each.
Aadhaar name change documents list — passport, PAN, voter ID, driving licence, employer photo ID, marriage certificate, divorce decree or gazette notification, depending on your reason.
Aadhaar PAN link name mismatch — fix Aadhaar first, then file the PAN correction. A mismatched PAN can be treated as inoperative and raises TDS under section 206AA.
Aadhaar name change for child — a parent files it, with a birth certificate as the natural proof. Combining it with the mandatory biometric update at age 5 or 15 saves a visit.
Gazette notification for name change Karnataka — needed for a genuinely new name and for the Aadhaar exception route. Full guide.
Aadhaar name in Kannada wrong — the regional-language line is part of your record. Correct it in the same update as the English line and check both on the downloaded Aadhaar.
Aadhaar name update rejected reasons — name mismatch, illegible scan, invalid or expired document, limit exceeded, biometric verification required, mobile not linked.
myAadhaar login OTP not received — your mobile is not linked to Aadhaar. That has to be fixed in person at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra before any online update will work.
Every rule and fee on this page can be verified at source. UIDAI changes fees and windows, so confirm before you pay.
