Quick answer

To change your name in Aadhaar in Karnataka, log in to myAadhaar with your registered mobile and file a demographic update with one valid proof of identity in the new name, or visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra if biometric confirmation is asked for. The fee is about Rs 50. A marriage certificate is enough for a married surname and no gazette is needed. It takes roughly 7 to 30 days. The one rule that catches people out: UIDAI permits a name change only twice in a lifetime, and once both are used you need a Regional Office exception request, where a gazette does become necessary.

The basics

What is an Aadhaar name change in Karnataka?

Key facts at a glance

  • Fee: about Rs 50 for a name update, whether you file on myAadhaar or at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
  • Not the same thing: re-uploading proof documents is a document update and has been free during UIDAI’s current window. A name change is a demographic update and carries the fee. Do not assume one covers the other.
  • Time: commonly 7 to 30 days, tracked with your Update Request Number.
  • Lifetime limit: a name may be changed twice. Date of birth once. Gender once.
  • Limit already used? There is an exception route through a UIDAI Regional Office, and that is the one Aadhaar situation where a gazette is genuinely required.
  • Gazette for a married surname: not needed. A marriage certificate is accepted proof.
  • Your Aadhaar carries two names: the English version and the Kannada version. Both should be corrected together.
  • Biometrics: a name change frequently triggers biometric confirmation, so plan for one centre visit even if you start online.

Checked against UIDAI in August 2026. Fees and windows change, so confirm on myAadhaar before you pay.

Changing the name on your Aadhaar is usually simpler than people expect, and for most cases you do not need a gazette at all. Whether you are adding a spouse’s surname after marriage, fixing a spelling error, or aligning Aadhaar with a legal name change, the update is done either online through the myAadhaar portal or in person at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. We sell gazette filings, so please read that in the spirit it is written.

How to Name Change in Aadhaar Card in Karnataka | Aadhaar card correction 2026

What the video covers, in text
The video runs through the same route the page sets out: logging in to myAadhaar with the OTP sent to your registered mobile, opening the name update under demographic details, entering the name exactly as it appears on your proof, uploading a flat readable scan and paying the fee of about Rs 50. It covers which document to use for each reason — a marriage certificate for a married surname, a divorce decree for a reversion, an existing ID for a spelling fix, a gazette only for a genuinely new name. It also covers when an Aadhaar Seva Kendra visit becomes unavoidable, and the twice-in-a-lifetime limit that makes casual edits expensive.
Online route

How to change your Aadhaar name online on myAadhaar

For most people in Karnataka, the online route is the quickest, as long as your mobile number is linked to Aadhaar.

1

Log in to myAadhaar

Open the myAadhaar portal and log in with your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your registered mobile.

2

Choose the name update

Select the name update option under demographic details.

3

Enter the correct name

Type your name exactly as it should appear, matching your proof of identity.

4

Upload your proof

Upload a clear scan of a valid proof of identity in the correct name, then pay the update fee.

5

Submit and track

Submit and note your Update Request Number to track the status. The portal confirms each step by OTP, which is why the registered mobile matters.

Come prepared

Which documents UIDAI accepts for a name change

UIDAI accepts a range of documents as proof of identity, as long as the document shows the name you want on Aadhaar.

Which document to use for an Aadhaar name change, by reason, Karnataka 2026
Your reasonUse this proofGazette?
Spelling error or a wrong initialAny existing valid photo ID that already carries the correct spelling — passport, PAN, voter ID or driving licenceNo
Surname change after marriageMarriage certificateNo
Reverting to a maiden name after divorceDivorce decree, or a document already in the maiden nameNo
Expanding initials into a full nameA school certificate, passport or other ID showing the expanded formNo, if a document already shows it
Adopting a genuinely new nameGazette notificationYes
You have no document in the new name at allA certificate of identity from a gazetted officer on UIDAI’s standard format, where acceptedDepends on the change
AdoptionAdoption certificateNo
Both name changes already usedRegional Office exception request — gazette required at this stageYes

The one rule that matters: the name on your chosen document must match the name you type, letter for letter. The portal and the centre both check it character by character, and a single extra space or a missing initial is a rejection.

The detail that fails people

What “exact match” actually means

Almost every rejection we see comes down to this, and almost no guide explains it. “Matching” is stricter than it sounds.

Examples of name mismatches that cause an Aadhaar update to be rejected
On your documentWhat you typedResult
PRIYA RPriya RameshRejected. The initial and the expanded surname are not the same string.
Priya Ramesh KumarPriya R KumarRejected, for the same reason in reverse.
Priya  Sharma (two spaces)Priya SharmaOften rejected. Extra whitespace counts.
Priya SharmaPRIYA SHARMAUsually fine. Case is generally not the problem.
Sharma Priya (surname first)Priya SharmaRejected. Word order matters.
Priya SharmaPriya Sharma (with a trailing full stop)Rejected. Punctuation counts.

What to do: open your proof document, read the name aloud character by character including spaces and initials, then type it. Do not type it from memory and do not tidy it up. If the document itself is wrong, correct that document first — not Aadhaar.

The honest answer

Do you even need a gazette for Aadhaar?

This is where a lot of people are misled. For a normal Aadhaar name update, you do not need a gazette.

No gazette needed

Routine updates

  • A spelling correction or a wrong initial.
  • A transliteration fix between Kannada and English.
  • A surname change after marriage or a name change after divorce.
Gazette needed

A major legal name change

So the gazette is tied to the size of the change, not to Aadhaar itself. If a service pushes a gazette for a simple correction, ask more questions. For a spelling issue, see our name spelling correction in Karnataka guide.

The rule nobody warns you about

The Two-Change Limit, and What to Do If You Have Used It

UIDAI permits a name change twice in a lifetime. Date of birth may be changed once, and gender once. A one-letter spelling correction consumes an update exactly the same as a full change of name, which is why casual edits are expensive in a way that has nothing to do with the Rs 50.

Before you file anything: decide your final name. Not the name for now, the name for the rest of your life. If you are getting married soon, or a gazette is in progress, wait and make one change rather than two.

If your request is rejected as “limit exceeded”

This is not the end of the road, but it is a different process and very few guides describe it accurately. UIDAI runs an exception handling process through its Regional Offices, governed by a published Standard Operating Procedure for name and gender updates.

  1. File the update anyway and let it be rejected. You need the rejection on record, with the enrolment or service request number, before the exception route opens.
  2. Contact UIDAI on 1947, or through the grievance channel listed on the UIDAI portal, and ask for the name update to be processed as an exception through the Regional Office.
  3. Send the supporting set. UIDAI asks for the EID slip from the latest enrolment, a gazette notification of the name change, and a supporting proof of identity in the old name bearing your photograph. Depending on the reason, a divorce decree, adoption certificate or marriage certificate is asked for instead of or alongside these.
  4. Keep the grievance reference and track it. The Regional Office conducts its own verification, and approval is not automatic.

This is the one Aadhaar case where a gazette is genuinely required. Not for a spelling fix, not for a married surname — but once both of your lifetime name changes are gone, UIDAI wants the strongest available proof, and a gazette notification is what that means. We sell gazette filings and we still think you should avoid ever reaching this point. See our gazette name change in Karnataka guide if you are already here.

Karnataka specific

The Kannada Name on Your Aadhaar

Your Aadhaar letter carries your name twice: once in English and once in the regional language, which for most Karnataka residents is Kannada. Both versions are part of your record, and both are what other systems read when they verify you.

This matters more than people realise. A transliteration between Kannada and English is not mechanical — the same Kannada spelling can be written several defensible ways in English, and vice versa. If only the English line is corrected and the Kannada line still carries the old form, you can pass one verification and fail another. When you file the update, check that both lines show the corrected name before you accept the acknowledgement, and check both again on the downloaded Aadhaar once the update is approved.

If you moved to Karnataka from another state: your Aadhaar may still carry the regional language of the state where you enrolled. That is normal and is not itself an error. It only needs attention if the name in that language is wrong.

Common case

Aadhaar name change after marriage in Karnataka

After marriage, a woman adding or changing to her spouse's surname updates Aadhaar with a marriage certificate as the proof of identity. You can do this online through myAadhaar if your mobile is linked, or at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. A gazette is not required for a marriage surname change. Once Aadhaar shows the new surname, updating PAN, bank, and passport becomes smoother, since each can reference the corrected Aadhaar. For a full surname change, see our surname change in Karnataka guide.

Children

Changing a Child’s Name on Aadhaar

A child’s Aadhaar works differently in two ways worth knowing before you file.

Under 5

Baal Aadhaar

  • Issued without the child’s biometrics, linked to a parent’s.
  • A parent or guardian files the name update with their own authentication.
  • A birth certificate is the natural proof for a name correction.
At 5 and at 15

Mandatory biometric update

  • Biometrics must be captured at a centre when the child turns 5, and again at 15.
  • If a name correction is due anyway, doing it at the same visit saves a trip.
  • Both parents’ involvement is the norm for a substantive name change.

A child’s two-change limit works exactly the same way, and it is easy to burn through it early with school-driven spelling corrections. Decide the spelling the child will carry into their SSLC and beyond, then change it once. For a full legal change to a child’s name, see our guides on the process for changing a child’s name in Karnataka and the documents required for a minor’s name change.

Which route

Online or Aadhaar Seva Kendra? When you must visit in person

Both routes work across Karnataka, but they are not interchangeable in every case.

Online on myAadhaar

Fastest for a simple update

  • Your mobile is linked to Aadhaar.
  • You have a clear proof of identity.
  • Every step is confirmed by OTP.
Aadhaar Seva Kendra

When you must visit

  • Your mobile is not linked to Aadhaar.
  • The update needs biometric confirmation.
  • Carry your original documents and a self-attested copy.

A name change often needs biometric verification at the centre, so be prepared to visit even if you start online. Karnataka has Aadhaar Seva Kendras and enrolment centres in Bangalore and across the state.

Money and time

Real fees, timeline, and how many times you can change

Biometric updateAadhaar Seva Kendra onlyAbout Rs 125
Mandatory biometric update at age 5 or 15Aadhaar Seva KendraFree

Do not confuse the two free-sounding things. UIDAI’s free window applies to a document update — re-uploading your proof of identity and proof of address so the record is refreshed. Changing your actual name is a demographic update and carries the fee. Confirm the current position on myAadhaar before you assume either way.

Timeline

Commonly 7 to 30 days after submission, and often inside a fortnight. Track it with your Update Request Number and download the updated Aadhaar once it is approved.

How many times

Twice in a lifetime for a name, once for date of birth, once for gender. A one-letter spelling fix uses one of the two, so decide your final name before you file.

Biometrics

A name change frequently triggers biometric confirmation at a centre even when you start online, so plan for one visit.

Hidden cost

None from UIDAI. The real cost of getting it wrong is the wasted lifetime change, not the Rs 50.

If it goes wrong

If Your Aadhaar Update Is Rejected

Rejections are common and almost always fixable. What matters is reading the reason correctly, because the fix is different in each case — and because a rejection for the wrong reason can cost you one of your two lifetime changes.

Aadhaar name update rejection reasons and how to fix each one
Reason givenWhat it meansWhat to do
Name mismatch with the documentWhat you typed does not match your proof character for characterRe-file with the name copied exactly from the document, including initials and spacing
Document not legibleThe scan is blurred, cropped, angled or shadowedRe-scan flat, all four corners in frame, readable at full size
Invalid documentThe proof is not on UIDAI’s accepted list, or it has expiredChoose a different proof from the accepted list
Limit exceededBoth lifetime name changes are already usedThe Regional Office exception route, which needs a gazette
Biometric verification requiredThe change is substantive enough that UIDAI wants you in personBook an Aadhaar Seva Kendra appointment and carry the originals
Mobile not linkedThe OTP could not reach a registered numberLink your mobile at a centre first, then re-file

How to track and escalate

  1. Keep the Update Request Number from the acknowledgement. Without it you cannot check status or escalate.
  2. Check status on myAadhaar under enrolment and update status before assuming anything has gone wrong. Most cases are simply still in process.
  3. Call 1947, the UIDAI helpline, or file through the grievance channel on the UIDAI portal if the status is unclear or the rejection reason does not match your file.
  4. Do not re-file repeatedly. Each accepted name change consumes one of your two, and repeated submissions are the fastest way to reach the limit for no benefit.
Keep records in sync

After Aadhaar: keeping PAN, passport, and bank aligned

Aadhaar sits at the base of your identity records, so a change here should flow through to the rest. Once your Aadhaar shows the new name, update PAN next, then your bank and KYC, then passport, voter ID, driving licence, insurance, and employer records. Carry your proof of change for each. Aligning Aadhaar first, then PAN and passport, is what stops a mismatch from blocking a visa, a loan, or a job verification later. For the passport step, see our name change in passport in Karnataka guide.

Avoid a delay

Common mistakes that delay an Aadhaar name change

Name does not match the document, even by a single letter or an extra initial.

Trying the online route without a mobile number linked to Aadhaar.

Uploading a blurry or cropped scan of the document.

Getting a gazette for a simple correction or marriage change that did not need one.

Repeated small edits that hit the twice-in-a-lifetime limit.

Not updating PAN and passport afterward, so records still clash.

People Also Ask

How do I change my name in Aadhaar online? Log in to myAadhaar with your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your registered mobile, open the name update under demographic details, type the new name exactly as it appears on your proof, upload a clear scan of that proof, pay about Rs 50 and note the Update Request Number.

How much does an Aadhaar name change cost? About Rs 50, whether you file online on myAadhaar or at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. A biometric update, if one is needed, is around Rs 125. Re-uploading proof documents is a separate free service and is not the same as changing your name.

How many times can I change my name on Aadhaar? Twice in a lifetime. Date of birth may be changed once and gender once. A one-letter spelling correction uses one of your two, which is why casual edits are worth avoiding.

What if I have already changed my name twice? Your next request will be rejected as limit exceeded. UIDAI then runs an exception process through its Regional Offices: call 1947 or use the grievance channel, quote the enrolment number from the rejected request, and supply a gazette notification along with a photo-bearing proof in the old name. Approval is not automatic.

Is a gazette needed for an Aadhaar name change? Not for a spelling correction, a married surname or a post-divorce reversion. It is needed for a genuinely new name, and it is required for the Regional Office exception route once both lifetime changes are used.

How long does an Aadhaar name change take? Commonly 7 to 30 days from submission, and often inside a fortnight. Track it with the Update Request Number on myAadhaar rather than re-filing.

Which documents does UIDAI accept for a name change? A valid passport, PAN card, voter ID, driving licence, a service photo identity card from a recognised employer, a marriage certificate for a married surname, a divorce decree for a reversion, and a gazette notification for a full legal change.

Can I change my Aadhaar name without any document? Not simply on request. Where you hold no document in the new name, UIDAI’s standard certificate of identity signed by a gazetted officer is accepted in some circumstances. For a genuinely new name a gazette remains the clean route.

Do I need to visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra? Often, yes. A name change frequently triggers biometric confirmation even when you start online, and a centre visit is unavoidable if your mobile number is not linked to Aadhaar.

Can I change my Aadhaar name after marriage without a gazette? Yes. A marriage certificate is accepted proof for a married surname. If a service insists you need a gazette for this, ask them which UIDAI rule they are relying on.

Why was my Aadhaar update rejected? Most often because the name you typed does not match your proof character for character, or because the scan was blurred, cropped or angled. Invalid documents, an unlinked mobile and the two-change limit make up nearly all of the rest.

Does my Aadhaar name have to match my PAN? In practice, yes. A PAN that does not reconcile with Aadhaar can be treated as inoperative, which pushes tax deducted at source to twenty per cent under section 206AA and stalls refunds. Update Aadhaar first, then PAN.

FAQs

Aadhaar name change in Karnataka: FAQs

How do I change my name in Aadhaar in Karnataka?
Log in to myAadhaar with your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your registered mobile, open the name update under demographic details, type the new name exactly as it appears on your proof, upload a clear scan of that proof and pay about Rs 50. If biometric confirmation is asked for, visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with your originals.
Can I change my Aadhaar name entirely online?
Sometimes. The filing is online, but a name change frequently triggers biometric confirmation, which can only be done at a centre. Plan for one visit and treat it as a bonus if you are not called in.
How much does an Aadhaar name change cost?
About Rs 50 for the demographic update, the same online or at a centre. A biometric update, if one is required, is around Rs 125. Downloading your e-Aadhaar afterwards is free.
Is re-uploading my documents the same as changing my name?
No, and the difference matters because one has been free and the other is not. A document update refreshes the proof of identity and proof of address held against your record. A name change is a demographic update and carries the fee. Confirm the current position on myAadhaar.
How long does an Aadhaar name change take?
Commonly 7 to 30 days from submission, and often inside a fortnight. Track it with your Update Request Number rather than filing again, because a second filing can consume one of your two lifetime changes for nothing.
How many times can I change my name on Aadhaar?
Twice in a lifetime. Date of birth may be changed once and gender once. A single-letter spelling correction uses one of your two exactly as a full change of name would.
What happens if I have already used both name changes?
Your next request is rejected as limit exceeded. UIDAI then runs an exception process through its Regional Offices. You call 1947 or use the grievance channel, quote the enrolment number from the rejected request, and supply a gazette notification together with a photo-bearing proof of identity in the old name. Approval is not automatic.
Do I need a gazette to change my name in Aadhaar?
Not for a spelling correction, a married surname or a reversion after divorce. You need one for a genuinely new name, and you need one for the Regional Office exception route once both lifetime changes are gone. We sell gazette filings, so please take that in the spirit it is written.
Can I change my Aadhaar name after marriage without a gazette?
Yes. A marriage certificate is accepted proof for a married surname. If a service tells you a gazette is compulsory for this, ask which UIDAI rule they are relying on.
Which documents does UIDAI accept for a name change?
A valid passport, PAN card, voter ID, driving licence, a service photo identity card from a recognised employer, a marriage certificate for a married surname, a divorce decree for a reversion, an adoption certificate, or a gazette notification for a full legal change.
Can I change my Aadhaar name without any supporting document?
Not on request alone. Where you hold nothing in the new name, UIDAI’s standard certificate of identity signed by a gazetted officer is accepted in some circumstances. For a genuinely new name a gazette is the clean route and avoids arguments at the counter.
What does “the name must match exactly” actually mean?
Character for character, including initials, word order, spacing and punctuation. PRIYA R and Priya Ramesh are different strings. So are Priya Sharma and Sharma Priya. Read your document aloud character by character and type it, rather than typing from memory.
How do I correct a spelling mistake in my Aadhaar name?
File a demographic update with an existing document that already carries the correct spelling — a passport, PAN, voter ID or driving licence. No gazette. But remember it consumes one of your two lifetime changes, so check every letter before you submit.
Can I expand my initials on Aadhaar?
Yes, if you hold a document that already shows the expanded form, such as a school certificate or passport. If nothing shows it, you are effectively adopting a different written name and a gazette becomes the reliable route.
Can I revert to my maiden name after divorce?
Yes. A divorce decree works as proof, and so does any existing document already in your maiden name. No gazette is needed for this.
Do I need biometric verification for a name change?
Often. UIDAI asks for it when the change is substantive rather than cosmetic, and it can only be done in person. Carry your original documents and a self-attested copy of each.
Can I update Aadhaar without a registered mobile number?
No. Every online step is confirmed by OTP to the registered mobile. If yours is not linked, that has to be fixed in person at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra before any online update will work.
Why was my Aadhaar name update rejected?
Most often the name did not match the document character for character, or the scan was blurred, cropped or angled. Invalid or expired documents, an unlinked mobile, a requirement for biometrics, and the two-change limit account for nearly all of the rest.
How do I track my Aadhaar update?
Use the Update Request Number from your acknowledgement on the enrolment and update status page on myAadhaar. If the status is unclear or the rejection reason does not match your file, call 1947 or use the grievance channel on the UIDAI portal.
My Aadhaar name is wrong in Kannada but right in English. Does that matter?
Yes. Your Aadhaar carries the name in both English and the regional language, and both are part of the record that other systems read. Correct them in the same update and check both lines on the downloaded Aadhaar afterwards.
I enrolled in another state and my Aadhaar shows a different regional language. Is that a problem?
No, that is normal and is not an error in itself. It only needs attention if the name written in that language is actually wrong.
Should I change Aadhaar before PAN and passport?
Yes. Aadhaar sits underneath the rest, and PAN, bank and passport all reference it. Update Aadhaar first, then PAN, then everything else, with the passport last.
What happens if my Aadhaar and PAN names do not match?
A PAN that does not reconcile with Aadhaar can be treated as inoperative. Tax deducted at source rises to twenty per cent under section 206AA of the Income Tax Act and refunds stall. It is the most expensive consequence of a mismatch anywhere in this process.
How do I change a child’s name on Aadhaar?
A parent or guardian files it with their own authentication, using a birth certificate as the natural proof. If the child is approaching 5 or 15, combine it with the mandatory biometric update and save a separate visit.
Does a child have the same two-change limit?
Yes, and it is easy to burn through early with school-driven spelling corrections. Settle on the spelling the child will carry into their SSLC and beyond, then change it once.
Can I change my Aadhaar name and address in the same request?
They are separate update types with separate proofs. Filing them together is possible in some flows, but if one fails it can drag the other with it. Doing them one at a time is slower and safer.
Is there any way to speed up an Aadhaar update?
No. There is no Tatkaal equivalent for Aadhaar, and anyone offering one is selling you something UIDAI does not provide. What you can control is getting the submission right first time, which is where the real weeks are lost.
Should I pay someone to do this for me?
For a straightforward spelling fix or a married surname, no — it is genuinely a do-it-yourself job and we would rather you kept the money. Paid help earns its fee when a gazette is involved, when you are near the two-change limit, or when a previous attempt has already been rejected.
What should I do the moment my update is approved?
Download the updated e-Aadhaar and check both the English and the regional-language line. Then start the PAN correction, since everything else keys off those two agreeing.
What is the single biggest mistake people make?
Treating a name change as reversible. It is not, in any practical sense, because you only have two. Decide the name you will carry for the rest of your life, check it letter by letter against your proof, and file once.
