Log in to myAadhaar with your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your registered mobile, open the name update under demographic details, type the new name exactly as it appears on your proof, upload a clear scan of that proof and pay about Rs 50. If biometric confirmation is asked for, visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with your originals.
Can I change my Aadhaar name entirely online?
Sometimes. The filing is online, but a name change frequently triggers biometric confirmation, which can only be done at a centre. Plan for one visit and treat it as a bonus if you are not called in.
How much does an Aadhaar name change cost?
About Rs 50 for the demographic update, the same online or at a centre. A biometric update, if one is required, is around Rs 125. Downloading your e-Aadhaar afterwards is free.
Is re-uploading my documents the same as changing my name?
No, and the difference matters because one has been free and the other is not. A document update refreshes the proof of identity and proof of address held against your record. A name change is a demographic update and carries the fee. Confirm the current position on myAadhaar.
How long does an Aadhaar name change take?
Commonly 7 to 30 days from submission, and often inside a fortnight. Track it with your Update Request Number rather than filing again, because a second filing can consume one of your two lifetime changes for nothing.
How many times can I change my name on Aadhaar?
Twice in a lifetime. Date of birth may be changed once and gender once. A single-letter spelling correction uses one of your two exactly as a full change of name would.
What happens if I have already used both name changes?
Your next request is rejected as limit exceeded. UIDAI then runs an exception process through its Regional Offices. Do I need a gazette to change my name in Aadhaar?

Can I change my Aadhaar name after marriage without a gazette?

Can I change my Aadhaar name without any supporting document?
Not on request alone. Where you hold nothing in the new name, UIDAI’s standard certificate of identity signed by a gazetted officer is accepted in some circumstances. For a genuinely new name a gazette is the clean route and avoids arguments at the counter.
What does “the name must match exactly” actually mean?
Character for character, including initials, word order, spacing and punctuation. PRIYA R and Priya Ramesh are different strings. So are Priya Sharma and Sharma Priya. Read your document aloud character by character and type it, rather than typing from memory.
How do I correct a spelling mistake in my Aadhaar name?
File a demographic update with an existing document that already carries the correct spelling — a passport, PAN, voter ID or driving licence. No gazette. But remember it consumes one of your two lifetime changes, so check every letter before you submit.
Can I expand my initials on Aadhaar?
Yes, if you hold a document that already shows the expanded form, such as a school certificate or passport. If nothing shows it, you are effectively adopting a different written name and a gazette becomes the reliable route.
Can I revert to my maiden name after divorce?
Yes. A divorce decree works as proof, and so does any existing document already in your maiden name. No gazette is needed for this.
Do I need biometric verification for a name change?
Often. UIDAI asks for it when the change is substantive rather than cosmetic, and it can only be done in person. Carry your original documents and a self-attested copy of each.
Can I update Aadhaar without a registered mobile number?
No. Every online step is confirmed by OTP to the registered mobile. If yours is not linked, that has to be fixed in person at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra before any online update will work.
Why was my Aadhaar name update rejected?
Most often the name did not match the document character for character, or the scan was blurred, cropped or angled. Invalid or expired documents, an unlinked mobile, a requirement for biometrics, and the two-change limit account for nearly all of the rest.
How do I track my Aadhaar update?
Use the Update Request Number from your acknowledgement on the enrolment and update status page on myAadhaar. If the status is unclear or the rejection reason does not match your file, call 1947 or use the grievance channel on the UIDAI portal.
My Aadhaar name is wrong in Kannada but right in English. Does that matter?
Yes. Your Aadhaar carries the name in both English and the regional language, and both are part of the record that other systems read. Correct them in the same update and check both lines on the downloaded Aadhaar afterwards.
I enrolled in another state and my Aadhaar shows a different regional language. Is that a problem?
No, that is normal and is not an error in itself. It only needs attention if the name written in that language is actually wrong.
Should I change Aadhaar before PAN and passport?
Yes. Aadhaar sits underneath the rest, and PAN, bank and passport all reference it. Update Aadhaar first, then PAN, then everything else, with the passport last.
What happens if my Aadhaar and PAN names do not match?
A PAN that does not reconcile with Aadhaar can be treated as inoperative. Tax deducted at source rises to twenty per cent under section 206AA of the Income Tax Act and refunds stall. It is the most expensive consequence of a mismatch anywhere in this process.
How do I change a child’s name on Aadhaar?
A parent or guardian files it with their own authentication, using a birth certificate as the natural proof. If the child is approaching 5 or 15, combine it with the mandatory biometric update and save a separate visit.
Does a child have the same two-change limit?
Yes, and it is easy to burn through early with school-driven spelling corrections. Settle on the spelling the child will carry into their SSLC and beyond, then change it once.
Can I change my Aadhaar name and address in the same request?
They are separate update types with separate proofs. Filing them together is possible in some flows, but if one fails it can drag the other with it. Doing them one at a time is slower and safer.
Is there any way to speed up an Aadhaar update?
No. There is no Tatkaal equivalent for Aadhaar, and anyone offering one is selling you something UIDAI does not provide. What you can control is getting the submission right first time, which is where the real weeks are lost.
Should I pay someone to do this for me?
For a straightforward spelling fix or a married surname, no — it is genuinely a do-it-yourself job and we would rather you kept the money. Paid help earns its fee when a gazette is involved, when you are near the two-change limit, or when a previous attempt has already been rejected.
What should I do the moment my update is approved?
Download the updated e-Aadhaar and check both the English and the regional-language line. Then start the PAN correction, since everything else keys off those two agreeing.
What is the single biggest mistake people make?
Treating a name change as reversible. It is not, in any practical sense, because you only have two. Decide the name you will carry for the rest of your life, check it letter by letter against your proof, and file once.
