To change your name on a driving licence in Karnataka, visit the Parivahan Sewa Portal (sarathi.parivahan.gov.in), select Karnataka and your RTO, choose "Change of Name in DL" under driving licence services, fill Form 2 online, upload your Gazette notification (for legal name changes) or supporting documents (for spelling corrections), pay the fee of Rs 200, and submit. For legal name changes, you must first obtain a Gazette notification from the Karnataka e-Gazette portal (erajyapatra.karnataka.gov.in) — this takes 25-45 days. The RTO application takes 2-4 weeks for processing.

The RTO accepts a marriage certificate for a married surname and a decree for a post-divorce reversion. A Gazette is needed when you are adopting a different name, or when a Government service record has to be amended.
If it's just a typo or minor spelling error, you can apply directly with Aadhaar or PAN showing the correct spelling.
The RTO charges Rs 200 for any change in particulars recorded in the driving licence.

Legal requirement: Under Rule 27 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, your driving licence must reflect your current legal name.
Every guide stops when the new licence arrives. Your licence is one of several transport records carrying your name, and updating it does not touch the others.

The one worth doing on the same day: the RC. A traffic stop or an insurance claim puts your licence and your registration certificate side by side, and a mismatch between them is far more visible than a mismatch with a document nobody is looking at. If you own a vehicle, treat DL and RC as one job rather than two.
While the replacement card is being made, keep the acknowledgement and carry your digital licence on DigiLocker or mParivahan. A digitally issued licence held there is valid for verification, which matters if you drive daily and there is a gap between surrendering the old card and collecting the new one.
On the form number: state RTOs differ in how they label the application, and the Parivahan portal generates the correct form for your state as you go, so you do not need to identify it yourself. If you are filing on paper at a Karnataka RTO counter, ask which form they want before filling anything in.
Applies when your name has a typo or minor spelling error — for example, "Rajes" instead of "Rajesh." You need Aadhaar or PAN showing the correct spelling. No Gazette required. Processing: 2-4 weeks. Fee: Rs 200.
Applies when changing your name entirely — after marriage, divorce, religious reasons, or personal choice. Gazette notification is mandatory. Gazette: 25-45 days. RTO: 2-4 weeks after Gazette. Total: ~2-3 months. Total cost: ~Rs 3,000-6,500.
Prepare on non-judicial stamp paper (Rs 50-100 recommended). Include old name, new name, reason, Karnataka address, date and signature. Get it notarized by a Karnataka Notary Public. Have 3-4 copies made.
Publish in one Kannada daily (Prajavani, Vijayavani) and one English daily (Times of India, Deccan Herald). Cost: Rs 800-3,500 total. Keep 3-5 full original newspaper pages — not just the ad clipping.
Visit erajyapatra.karnataka.gov.in. Register, fill the online form, upload affidavit, newspaper clippings, ID proof, address proof, and photographs. Pay fee: Rs 500-800.
Processing time: 25-45 days. Download your Gazette notification PDF from the portal once published. This is accepted by Aadhaar, PAN, passport, banks, and RTO.
Go to sarathi.parivahan.gov.in. Select Karnataka from the dropdown.
Navigate to Online Services → Driving Licence Related Services → Services on Driving Licence. Choose "Change of Name in Driving Licence."
Enter your Driving Licence number and Date of Birth. Generate OTP. Fill Form 2 with your updated name. Upload Gazette (if legal change), Aadhaar, PAN, photograph, and existing DL.
Pay Rs 200 online via debit card, credit card, or net banking. Note your application reference number — you'll need it to track status.
Visit your issuing RTO once for biometric verification. Track status on Parivahan using your reference number. Download or collect your updated DL once approved (2-4 weeks).
Go to the RTO office where your driving licence was originally issued.
Request Form 2. Fill in old name, new name, reason for change, and licence number.
Attach self-attested photocopies of all required documents (Gazette, Aadhaar, PAN, etc.).
Submit to the designated officer. Pay Rs 200 at the counter. Complete biometric verification. Collect acknowledgement receipt.

What to do: a service book is not amended on a marriage certificate, so take the deed and Central Gazette route (egazette.gov.in) for the service record. The driving licence itself is separate — the RTO accepts your marriage certificate for that, so you need not wait for the Gazette to update the licence.
