Change the name on your passport legally from anywhere in Karnataka. We handle the reissue for marriage, divorce, or a full legal name change, with the affidavit, newspaper notice and gazette done right when your case needs them.
Fill this quick form. We reply with your exact document list and a fixed quote.
To change your name in a passport in Karnataka, apply for a reissue on the Passport Seva portal under “Change in Existing Personal Particulars”, then attend your Passport Seva Kendra. For a married surname, submit the marriage certificate or Annexure J, a joint declaration by both spouses — no gazette. For divorce, the decree. Only a full legal name change needs an affidavit, two newspaper notices and a gazette. The fee is Rs 1,500 for a 36-page booklet on the normal track. It takes about 30 to 45 days, and you receive a new booklet with a new passport number while your old one is cancelled and returned to you.
Checked against Passport Seva in August 2026. Fees and rules change, so confirm on the portal before you pay.
A passport name change is done as a reissue, not a fresh passport. You apply on the Passport Seva portal, attend your Passport Seva Kendra, and receive a new booklet with your new name and a fresh passport number. The documents you submit depend on your reason, and that single fact decides how simple or involved your case is.
On the Passport Seva portal, choose reissue and the reason "Change in Existing Personal Particulars".
Marriage certificate, divorce decree, or the affidavit, newspaper and gazette set, based on your reason.
Verify documents at your Passport Seva Kendra, then police verification and dispatch follow.
How to Change Name On Passport in Karnataka | Passport reissue process 2026
You only need a gazette for a full legal name change, and then you can pick either one. Both are valid and legal across India. For passport and pan-India acceptance, many people choose the Central Gazette.
Some sites wrongly tell Karnataka residents there is no state gazette, or push a gazette on every case. Neither is true. Karnataka has its own gazette, and a simple marriage or spelling reissue usually needs no gazette at all. See our full gazette name change in Karnataka guide for the whole route.
Here is a point many people do not know: any Indian citizen can apply for the Central Gazette. There is no restriction, and you do not have to be a Central Government employee to use it. For a full legal name change on your passport, the Central Gazette (the Gazette of India, Part IV) is often the strongest choice, because it is recognized right across the country and by the passport office.
Prepare an affidavit on non-judicial stamp paper stating your old name, new name, address and reason, then have a notary public attest it.
Publish the name change in two daily newspapers, one English and one Kannada, and keep the full original pages.
Complete the prescribed form with an undertaking signed by two witnesses, and prepare a soft copy of the notice in MS Word as asked.
Send the affidavit, original newspaper pages, ID, photographs and the form to the Controller of Publications, Civil Lines, Delhi, and pay the fee through the BharatKosh gateway. The fee is about Rs 1,100 for adults and Rs 1,700 for minors.
Your notice is published in the Gazette of India, Part IV. You then download the digitally signed PDF from the official e-Gazette portal, and it is your legal proof.
Honest note: the Central Gazette takes a little longer than the state gazette, usually 4 to 12 weeks, and is submitted through a Delhi channel. If you have time and want the widest acceptance for a passport or visa, it is worth it. We can file it for you end to end.
This is the part most guides blur. Your documents depend entirely on why you are changing your name. Find your case below.
To add or take your spouse's surname, you usually need only the marriage certificate, or a joint declaration by both spouses. A gazette is generally not required. Read more on surname change in Karnataka.
To revert to your maiden name, submit a certified copy of the divorce decree, with an affidavit for the surname reversion. No fresh court case is needed. See name change after divorce in Karnataka.
For a new first name or a complete change, you need a notarized affidavit, two newspaper notices, and a gazette. For a major change, the gazette is treated as required.
A minor spelling fix or an expanded initial is usually supported by your other IDs that already carry the correct spelling, and often needs no gazette. See name spelling correction in Karnataka.
An Indian passport does not hold one “name”. It holds two separate fields, Surname and Given Name(s), and knowing which one you are changing decides what proof you need and how much trouble you are in.
| Your situation | Field that changes | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Taking your husband’s surname | Surname only | Simplest case. Marriage certificate or Annexure J. |
| Reverting to your maiden surname after divorce | Surname only | Decree plus an affidavit. No gazette. |
| Correcting a spelling in your first name | Given Name | Straightforward if an existing ID already carries the right spelling. |
| Adopting a completely new name | Both fields | Gazette, affidavit and two newspaper notices. |
| Expanding initials into full words | Usually Given Name | Needs a document already showing the expanded form, or a gazette. |
| Moving a word from Given Name to Surname | Both fields | Treated as a name change even though no letters change. Plan for a gazette. |
Single-name applicants are common in parts of India and the passport handles it by leaving the Surname field blank and putting the name in Given Name. Many countries’ immigration systems cannot read a blank surname, which is why applicants are often advised to adopt a surname before travelling. If you are doing that, understand that you are making a full name change, not a correction, and you will need the gazette route.
Before you type anything into the form: open your existing passport and look at how your name is actually split across the two fields today. People routinely apply to “change their name” when what they mean is to move a word from one field to the other, and the form does not warn you that these are different applications.
This causes the most confusion, so here is the straight version. The gazette is tied to the size of the change, not to the passport itself.
No gazette. The marriage certificate does the job, and Annexure J covers you if the marriage was never registered.
Generally no gazette. The divorce decree and an affidavit are the core documents.
Gazette required, along with the affidavit and two newspaper notices.
So if your case is marriage or divorce, do not let anyone push a gazette on you that you do not need. If it is a new first name or a complete change, plan for the gazette.
Fix your final name and make sure it is spelled the same across every document. For a full legal name change, draft and notarize your affidavit on non-judicial stamp paper.
For a full name change, publish in one English and one Kannada daily, and keep the full original pages. Marriage and spelling cases skip this step.
Choose reissue and "Change in Existing Personal Particulars", enter the new name, pay the fee, and book your Passport Seva Kendra slot.
Counter A takes your photo and fingerprints, Counter B verifies documents, and Counter C grants. Carry originals and self-attested copies.
Police verification and dispatch follow, often after dispatch for clean cases in 2026. Then align Aadhaar and PAN with the new name.
Every reissue needs your existing passport, present address proof, and the online application receipt. Then add the documents for your reason.
The passport fee is fixed and public. Everything else depends on which route your case takes.
| Booklet | Normal | Tatkaal |
|---|---|---|
| 36 pages, 10 years, adult | Rs 1,500 | Rs 3,500 |
| 60 pages, 10 years, adult | Rs 2,000 | Rs 4,000 |
| 36 pages, 5 years, minor under 15 | Rs 1,000 | Rs 3,000 |
| Replacement of a lost or damaged passport | Rs 3,000 | Rs 5,000 |
Tatkaal is the same Rs 2,000 premium on top of the normal fee in each case. It buys a faster appointment and faster processing, not a shortcut through the documents — and it is not available for every change of particulars, so check before you count on it.
| Only on the full name change route | Cost |
|---|---|
| Notarised affidavit on non-judicial stamp paper | Rs 100 to Rs 300 |
| Two newspaper notices, one English and one Kannada | Rs 500 to Rs 1,500 |
| Central Gazette fee, adult | Rs 1,100 to Rs 1,400, revised each financial year |
| Our service fee | From Rs 999 |
The fee is not refunded if you are rejected. A name mismatch between your application and your Aadhaar or PAN means paying Rs 1,500 again, plus another appointment and another day of leave. Get those two agreeing before you apply, not after.
This is the part no other guide answers, and it is the first thing anyone with a valid visa wants to know. Here is the honest position.
A reissue gives you a new booklet with a new passport number. Your old passport is cancelled — usually stamped or corner-clipped — and returned to you. Every visa, entry stamp and endorsement you have collected stays physically inside that cancelled booklet. Nothing is transferred across.
| Question | The position |
|---|---|
| Do I keep the old passport? | Yes. It is returned cancelled. Keep it safe — it is your only physical record of your visas and travel history. |
| Is my existing visa still valid? | That is the issuing country’s decision, not India’s. Many countries accept a valid visa in a cancelled passport when you carry both booklets. A name change is the complication: the visa carries a name you no longer hold. |
| Can I travel with both booklets? | Often yes, where the country permits it, and airlines will usually want to see both at check-in. Confirm with the consulate before you book, not at the airport. |
| Do I need a new visa? | Frequently, after a name change specifically. Budget for it if you travel. |
| What about tickets already booked in my old name? | Airline names must match the travel document you present. Change the booking or delay the passport application until after the trip. |
| What about my OCI card, if I hold one? | OCI particulars are tied to your passport. A new passport generally means updating the OCI record. Check the current rule with your nearest Indian mission. |
Practical advice: if you have a valuable multi-year visa and no urgent need to change your passport name, ask yourself whether it has to be done this year. There is no legal deadline for changing your passport after marriage. Doing it between trips rather than before one is usually the cheaper choice.
For a reissue with clean records, verification is commonly done after the passport is dispatched rather than before. A change of name can prompt the Regional Passport Office to order verification first instead. It is the RPO’s call, not yours, and there is nothing you can do to influence it beyond having consistent documents.
Your Emigration Check status is decided by your education documents, not your name. A name change does not alter it. If you were Non-ECR before, you remain Non-ECR. If your status is wrong, that is a separate correction with its own proof.
A reissue always produces a new number. Anywhere your passport number is on file — bank FATCA records, visa applications in progress, your employer, frequent-flyer accounts, insurance — needs updating. Nobody tells you this and it surfaces months later.
A minor’s passport works differently in three ways worth knowing before you apply.
If the child’s name is being changed because of a parent’s marriage or remarriage, expect the passport office to look closely at consent. See our guides on changing a child’s name in Karnataka and the documents required for a minor’s name change.
The Rs 1,500 is not refunded, so every item here is worth ten minutes of checking.
| Reason | How to avoid it |
|---|---|
| Name does not match Aadhaar or PAN | Update Aadhaar first, then PAN, then apply. This is the single most common cause and the most expensive. |
| Spelling varies across the affidavit, notice and application | Write the name once on one sheet and copy from it every time. |
| Newspaper page clipped | Submit the full page with the masthead and date visible, from both papers. |
| Marriage certificate has no photograph and no Annexure J supplied | Add Annexure J, signed by both spouses with a joint photograph. |
| Wrong application category chosen | It is a reissue under “Change in Existing Personal Particulars”, not a fresh passport and not a renewal. |
| Originals not carried to the Kendra | Carry every original plus one self-attested copy of each. Counter B checks originals. |
| Address proof does not match the declared address | Use a current Karnataka address proof if you now live here, and make sure it matches the form. |
The passport office checks consistency, so a mismatch elsewhere can cause trouble later. After your passport shows the new name, update these in a sensible order.
Update first at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or the UIDAI portal, since other offices check it.
Apply for a correction on the Protean or UTIITSL portal. Your PAN number stays the same.
Update at your home branch with the passport and updated Aadhaar. No charge for KYC.
File Form 8 on the Voters portal to update your name on the roll.
Apply on the Parivahan Sarathi portal and visit your RTO once for verification.
Update policy and payroll records so every future claim and pay slip matches.

Government fees are payable to the department directly. Fees are indicative and can change.
We handle passport name changes across Karnataka every week, so we know exactly which route your case needs. We tell you honestly whether you even need a gazette, we match every document so nothing gets rejected, and we keep your Aadhaar and PAN aligned so the passport counter sees no mismatch.
How do I change my name in my passport in Karnataka? Apply for a reissue on the Passport Seva portal under “Change in Existing Personal Particulars”, pay the fee, book a Passport Seva Kendra slot, and attend with your originals. Submit the marriage certificate or Annexure J for a married surname, the decree for a divorce, and an affidavit, two newspaper notices and a gazette only for a genuinely new name.
Do I need a gazette for a passport name change? Not for a married surname or a post-divorce reversion. Only for a genuinely new name, or where you are moving a word between the Surname and Given Name fields. We sell gazette filings, so please take that in the spirit it is written.
How much does a passport name change cost? Rs 1,500 for a 36-page ten-year booklet on the normal track, Rs 2,000 for 60 pages, and Rs 2,000 more for Tatkaal in each case. A minor’s five-year booklet is Rs 1,000. The fee is not refunded if the application is rejected.
What happens to my existing visas? They stay in the old booklet, which is cancelled and returned to you rather than kept. Whether you can still travel on a visa in a cancelled passport is the issuing country’s decision, and a name change specifically complicates it because the visa carries your old name. Check with the consulate before booking.
Does my passport number change? Yes. A reissue always produces a new booklet with a new number. Update it anywhere it is on file: bank FATCA records, in-progress visa applications, your employer, insurance and frequent-flyer accounts.
How long does a passport name change take? About 30 to 45 days end to end on the normal track, and considerably less on Tatkaal. A full legal name change adds three to eight weeks in front of that for the gazette to publish.
What is Annexure J? A self-attested joint declaration signed by both spouses, with a joint photograph, that the Ministry of External Affairs accepts in place of a registered marriage certificate. It exists for couples whose marriage was never registered, which is common.
Is police verification required? For a reissue with clean records it is commonly done after the passport is dispatched rather than before. A change of name can prompt the Regional Passport Office to order verification first. That decision is the RPO’s and consistent documents are the only thing you control.
Can I use Tatkaal for a name change? Often, and it adds Rs 2,000 and cuts the wait considerably. It is not available for every change of particulars, so confirm on the portal before you rely on it. Tatkaal buys speed, not a shortcut through the paperwork.
Do I have to change my passport name after marriage? No. There is no legal deadline and no penalty for keeping your maiden name on your passport. If you hold a valuable multi-year visa, doing it between trips rather than before one is usually the cheaper choice.
What if only my surname is changing? Then only the Surname field is touched and your Given Name is untouched. That is the simplest version of this application and it needs only the marriage certificate or Annexure J.
Does a name change affect my ECR or Non-ECR status? No. Emigration Check status is decided by your education documents, not your name. If you were Non-ECR before, you stay Non-ECR.
Passport name change after marriage documents — existing passport, marriage certificate or Annexure J, current address proof, and the online application receipt. No gazette. Full guide.
Annexure J passport format — a joint declaration by both spouses on the Ministry’s standard format, self-attested, carrying a joint photograph and both signatures. Downloadable from Passport Seva.
Passport reissue vs renewal — a renewal replaces an expiring booklet with no change of particulars. A name change is a reissue. Choosing the wrong category is a common rejection.
Passport fee for name change — Rs 1,500 for 36 pages, Rs 2,000 for 60 pages, Rs 2,000 more on Tatkaal, Rs 1,000 for a minor.
Change surname in passport after marriage without marriage certificate — use Annexure J. It exists precisely for marriages that were never registered.
Passport name change after divorce — certified copy of the decree, plus an affidavit if you are reverting your surname. No gazette needed. Divorce name change guide.
Gazette notification for passport name change — needed only for a genuinely new name. The Central Gazette is the right one for a passport file. Gazette guide.
Passport Seva Kendra Bangalore appointment — booked on the Passport Seva portal after you pay. Karnataka has Kendras in Bangalore, Mysuru, Mangaluru, Hubballi and Kalaburagi among others.
Aadhaar name change before passport — yes, do Aadhaar first, then PAN, then the passport. A mismatch is the most common and most expensive rejection. Aadhaar guide.
Passport name change for child — both parents sign Annexure D, the booklet is valid five years or until 18, and the fee is Rs 1,000.
New passport number after reissue — yes, every reissue produces a new number. Update your bank, employer, insurer and any pending visa applications.
Name change in passport cost in Karnataka — Rs 1,500 on the marriage route, or roughly Rs 4,200 to Rs 5,700 all-in on the full gazette route once the affidavit, notices, gazette fee and service fee are added. Cost breakdown.
Every fee and rule on this page can be verified at source. Passport rules and fees change, so confirm before you pay.
