Is the Error on the Card or in the Record?

Your licence card is printed from a database entry. The two are not the same thing, and finding out which one carries the wrong spelling tells you what to apply for. This takes five minutes and costs nothing.

When It Is Just a Spelling Fix

These are the everyday cases that count as a correction, not a name change:

• Wrong letter — a single letter typed incorrectly.
• Extra or missing space — words joined or split wrongly.
• Initials expanded wrongly — the wrong full form of an initial.
• Order of names — first and last name entered in the wrong order.

• Existing driving licence — the licence to be corrected.
• Aadhaar with correct spelling — as the matching proof.
• Photographs — if your RTO asks.

How to Correct the Spelling

Your Digital Copy Is Valid While You Wait

A correction takes a few weeks. In the meantime you still have to drive, and it is worth knowing that the digital copy on your phone is not a lesser document.

• Documents issued through DigiLocker are legally recognised — under section 9A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, together with the notification issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in February 2017.
• Transport documents were specifically covered — an advisory issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in August 2018 reinforced this for driving licences and registration certificates at roadside checks.
• So a refusal is not the last word — where someone declines a properly issued digital copy, you are entitled to ask for that refusal in writing.
• Keep the acknowledgement too — the application receipt shows a correction is in progress, which helps where a verifier queries the spelling.
• Do not stop driving over a spelling — a misspelt licence is still your licence. The correction is about consistency with your other records, not about validity.
• Carry both for a while — the old card and the digital copy, until the corrected card arrives and DigiLocker refreshes.

Why a Wrong Spelling Matters Beyond the Licence

A misspelt licence is rarely a problem on its own. It becomes one where something else is checked against it.

• It can stop the online application itself — even a slight difference against your Aadhaar record causes the portal's identity check to fail, which is the most common reason a correction request does not go through.
• Registration certificate consistency — where the name on your vehicle's registration certificate reads differently again, that inconsistency can surface at exactly the wrong moment.
• Insurance is where it bites — claims have been questioned over a difference between the name on identity documents and the name on vehicle papers, including where only the order of names differs.
• Employment and background checks — a licence used as identity proof is compared against Aadhaar and PAN, and a difference is treated as a mismatch rather than a typo.
• Digital records follow the database — so an uncorrected record keeps producing the wrong name every time a system fetches it.
• Fix the set, not one document — if the licence, the registration certificate and your identity documents disagree, decide the correct spelling once and align all of them.
