VTU Degree Certificate Name Change in Karnataka

A degree certificate is issued by your university, not the school board, so it has a separate process. For engineering degrees that is Visvesvaraya Technological University, or VTU, based in Belagavi. Other universities such as Bangalore University and Mysore University follow similar rules through their Registrar (Evaluation).

The SSLC-First Rule

This is where most people go wrong, so it comes first. A university will not change your degree in isolation. VTU explicitly requires that your new name is already on your SSLC and PUC marks cards before it will replicate the change on your degree and marks cards. The school records are the base, and the degree follows them.

The Free Window Most Students Miss

Everything else on this page describes fixing a name after the certificate exists. There is an earlier point at which VTU asks colleges to correct student data at no cost to you, and almost nobody uses it.

• VTU issues a correction circular for each admission year — the university publishes a circular asking colleges to check and correct the data of students admitted that year, and it does this annually.
• The fields it covers are exactly the ones that cause trouble later — the name, the father's name, gender and category of students admitted to the various programmes.

VTU treats the degree certificate and the marks cards as separate matters, with separate forms. Sending one form and expecting both to be corrected is a common and costly assumption.

• The checklist on the degree form has four items — a declaration that you have not studied at an autonomous college, self attested photocopies of the SSLC marks card, the online receipt of fees paid, and the original degree certificate.
• Write both names in capitals — the form asks for your name and your father's name exactly as printed on the marks card, and then the corrected version, so the reader is not left to work out the difference.
• Circulars supersede each other — VTU's name correction circular states that it supersedes all previous circulars, so check the current one rather than an older blog or a cached PDF.
