Date of Birth Correction in PAN Card in Karnataka

Is the date of birth wrong on your PAN card, or different from your Aadhaar? A mismatch can block PAN-Aadhaar linking, tax filing, and bank KYC. The good news is that PAN date of birth is corrected online. Here is the clear, honest way to fix it in Karnataka, and the right order with Aadhaar.

Quick answer: To correct the date of birth on your PAN card in Karnataka, file a PAN correction application online through the income tax PAN service portal, with a valid proof of date of birth like a birth certificate, matriculation certificate, or passport. Because Aadhaar allows only one date of birth update, it is often safer to correct PAN first, then align Aadhaar. The fee is about Rs 107 for a physical card or Rs 72 for an e-PAN, and the e-PAN usually arrives in about two to three days.

PAN is issued by the Income Tax Department, so its date of birth is corrected through the PAN service portals, not at a local office. This makes it one of the easier documents to fix, and a useful one to correct first when planning the order.

This guide is part of our wider date of birth correction service. Here we focus on PAN, the online route, and the correct-PAN-first order with Aadhaar.

The easy part

PAN Is Corrected Online

A PAN date of birth is corrected by filing a change or correction request through the official PAN service portals of the Income Tax Department. You select the date of birth field, enter the correct date, and upload a valid proof. A new PAN card with the same number and corrected details is issued.

No change of number: a correction keeps your existing PAN number. Only the recorded date of birth is fixed, so your tax history stays intact.
Look at the Back of Your Card

Which PAN Portal Is Yours

There is no single PAN website. Two service providers handle PAN on behalf of the Income Tax Department, and starting on the wrong one is a common early mistake.

  • Flip your PAN card over — the back names the provider that issued it, either Protean, formerly NSDL e-Gov, or UTIITSL.
  • Both reach the same database — either provider produces a valid corrected PAN, so if you no longer have the card you can simply pick whichever portal is easier for you.
  • You get a tracking reference either way — Protean issues a fifteen digit acknowledgement number and UTIITSL issues a coupon number. Save it before you close the page, because it is how you resume or track the application.
  • Aadhaar OTP based e-KYC is the cleanest route — nothing is printed and nothing is posted. The alternatives are a scanned upload with e-sign, or a physical dispatch, which carries a deadline explained further down this page.
  • A correction is never a new PAN application — Section 272B of the Income-tax Act levies a penalty of Rs 10,000 for holding more than one PAN. If your card is wrong, you correct the existing record, you never apply again.
Karnataka note: this is entirely an online process handled by the Income Tax Department, so there is no PAN counter to visit in Bangalore or anywhere else in the State for a date of birth correction.
The right order

Why Correct PAN First

When Aadhaar and PAN show different dates, the order you fix them in matters, and the reason is an asymmetry between the two systems that no other page spells out.

  • Aadhaar gives you exactly one date of birth update in a lifetime — set by Regulation 19(3) of the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Regulations, 2016. Spend it wrongly and the normal route closes.
  • PAN has no such limit — a PAN correction can be filed again if something is wrong, at the cost of another fee. It is the forgiving document of the two.
  • So the forgiving document goes first — correct PAN to the date your base record supports, confirm it has actually taken effect, and only then spend the single Aadhaar update to match it.
  • Doing it the other way round is the expensive mistake — changing Aadhaar first, to a date that later turns out to be wrong, leaves you with the exception handling process at a UIDAI Regional Office and no guarantee of approval.
Plan the sequence: if your base record, the birth certificate or 10th marks card, is correct, fix PAN to match it, then align Aadhaar last. See our Aadhaar date correction guide for the one-time limit.
What is accepted

Valid Proof of Date of Birth

The proof list for a date of birth correction is narrower than the general identity list, and this is where most rejections come from. Since 1 April 2026 the rules were tightened so that a date of birth change has to be backed by an acceptable proof rather than a self declaration.

  • Birth certificate — issued by the Registrar of Births and Deaths, and the strongest proof you can file.
  • Matriculation or 10th certificate — from a recognised board, and the usual choice when a birth certificate is unavailable or itself disputed.
  • Passport — widely accepted, and useful because it was itself issued against a verified date.
The trap to avoid: people commonly upload an Aadhaar or a driving licence as the date of birth proof. Those are identity documents, and for a date of birth change the accepted proofs are the birth certificate, the matriculation certificate and the passport. Using Aadhaar is also circular when the whole point is to correct PAN so that it matches a date Aadhaar may itself have recorded without documentary proof.
We pick the strongest proof: so the correction is accepted the first time, without a resubmission.
Important, 2026

What Changed on 1 April 2026

The PAN correction rules were rewritten this year, and many guides still describe the old system. Two changes matter directly for a date of birth correction.

  • New correction forms — the old combined request for a new PAN card or changes in PAN data was replaced under the Income-tax Act, 2025 with new correction forms, PAN CR-01 for individuals and PAN CR-02 for non-individuals. Online the portal simply serves you the current form, so the form name matters mainly for a paper application.
  • Self declaration no longer works — from 1 April 2026 every demographic correction has to be backed by valid proof of identity, address and date of birth. A name, date of birth or address change can no longer rest on a declaration alone.
  • This is why the proof list matters more than it used to — a date of birth correction filed with a weak document is now rejected where it might once have gone through.
  • Your PAN number is unaffected — a correction updates the details recorded against your existing PAN. The ten digit number stays with you for life and your tax history stays intact.
What has not changed: there is still no limit on how many times PAN details can be corrected. That is the whole reason PAN is the safe document to fix first.
Step by step

The Online Correction Process

Open the PAN correction form

Go to the official PAN service portal and choose the correction or change request.

Enter the correct date

Select the date of birth field and enter the correct date of birth.

Upload proof

Upload a valid proof of date of birth and your identity and address documents.

Verify and pay

Verify with Aadhaar-based e-KYC where possible and pay the small fee.

Receive the corrected PAN

The corrected PAN card is issued, usually within about one to two weeks.

We file it for you: we complete the form, attach the right proof, and track it, so the corrected PAN arrives without back and forth.
The Deadline Nobody Warns You About

The 15 Day Trap in a PAN Correction

If you choose the physical document route rather than Aadhaar e-KYC, your application is not finished when you pay. There is a deadline afterwards, and missing it quietly wastes the whole application.

  • The signed acknowledgement has to reach the provider within fifteen days — where you opt to send physical documents, the signed acknowledgement and the supporting documents must be despatched to Protean within 15 days of filing the online application.
  • Paying the fee is not the last step in that mode — the payment and the acknowledgement number only start the clock. Many people assume the process is complete at payment and do nothing further.
  • The simple way to avoid it entirely — choose paperless Aadhaar OTP based e-KYC, where your demographic data is used directly and there is nothing to print, sign or post.
  • Photograph and signature files have size limits — uploads are rejected for being oversized, so check the limits shown on the portal before you start rather than after a failure.
  • Save the reference before closing the tab — the token or acknowledgement number lets you resume a half completed form, and without it you start again.
What we do: we file through the paperless route wherever your Aadhaar allows it, so there is no posting deadline to miss and no courier to chase.
A common problem

Aadhaar and PAN Mismatch

A different date of birth on Aadhaar and PAN is a very common issue, and it blocks PAN-Aadhaar linking and tax filing. The fix is to decide the correct date from your base record, then align both to it in the right order.

Our approach: we confirm the correct date from your birth certificate or marks card, correct PAN online, then use the single Aadhaar update to match, so the two finally agree. See our date of birth correction overview for the full order.
Keep these ready

Documents You Need

  • Your PAN — the PAN number to be corrected.
  • Valid proof of date of birth — birth certificate, matriculation certificate, or passport. Not Aadhaar and not a driving licence.
  • Aadhaar — for e-KYC and identity.
  • Identity and address proof — as required by the PAN correction form.
Not sure which proof to use? Tell us what your base records show, and we will pick the strongest date of birth proof for the PAN correction.
Fee and time

Fee, Time, and Common Mistakes

Here are the actual numbers, which most guides leave vague.

  • About Rs 107 for a corrected physical card despatched to an Indian address, and about Rs 72 where you only want the e-PAN. A communication address outside India costs around Rs 1,017.
  • The fee is charged per application, not per field — so correcting your date of birth and your name together costs the same as correcting the date alone. If more than one detail is wrong, fix everything in a single application.
  • The e-PAN usually arrives in about two to three days after approval, and the physical card follows by post over roughly the next two weeks.
  • Track it with your reference — use the fifteen digit acknowledgement number on Protean or the coupon number on UTIITSL. Status usually appears after about 48 hours.
  • Allow time for the databases to sync — if you are correcting PAN in order to link it with Aadhaar, wait a couple of weeks after approval before retrying, since a fresh failure is often just a lag.
  • Fixing Aadhaar first — using its one-time change before correcting PAN.
  • Weak proof — uploading a document not accepted as date of birth proof.
  • Ignoring the base record — correcting PAN to a date the birth certificate does not support.
  • Name mismatch — not checking that the name also matches across PAN and Aadhaar.
We handle it end to end: the PAN correction, the right proof, and the Aadhaar order, so your date of birth matches across your records.

People Also Ask About PAN Date of Birth Correction

These are the follow-up questions Karnataka applicants search most, answered in one or two lines each.

How do I correct the date of birth on my PAN card in Karnataka?
File a correction request online on the Protean or UTIITSL portal, tick the date of birth field, enter the correct date, upload a valid proof of date of birth, verify with Aadhaar OTP e-KYC and pay the fee. The e-PAN usually arrives in about two to three days and the physical card over roughly two weeks.
How much does a PAN date of birth correction cost?
About Rs 107 for a corrected physical card to an Indian address, or about Rs 72 for an e-PAN only. A communication address outside India costs around Rs 1,017. The fee is per application, not per field corrected.
Which documents are accepted as proof of date of birth for PAN?
A birth certificate issued by the Registrar, a matriculation or 10th certificate from a recognised board, or a passport. Aadhaar and a driving licence are identity documents and are not the right proof for a date of birth change.
Should I fix PAN or Aadhaar first?
PAN first. Aadhaar allows exactly one date of birth update in a lifetime under Regulation 19(3) of the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Regulations, 2016, while PAN can be corrected again if needed. Fix the forgiving document first and spend the Aadhaar update last.
Does my PAN number change after a correction?
No. The ten digit PAN is permanent and stays with you for life. A correction updates the details recorded against it, and your tax history is unaffected.
Which portal should I use, Protean or UTIITSL?
Check the back of your PAN card, which names the provider that issued it. Both reach the same Income Tax Department database, so either produces a valid corrected PAN if you no longer have the card.
What changed in PAN corrections from 1 April 2026?
The old combined form was replaced under the Income-tax Act, 2025 with new correction forms, PAN CR-01 for individuals and PAN CR-02 for non-individuals. Every demographic correction now needs valid proof of identity, address and date of birth, so a self declaration is no longer enough.
Is there a deadline after I submit the application?
Yes, if you choose the physical document route. The signed acknowledgement and supporting documents must be despatched within 15 days of filing the online application. Choosing Aadhaar OTP based e-KYC avoids the deadline entirely.
Can I apply for a new PAN instead of correcting the old one?
No. Section 272B of the Income-tax Act levies a penalty of Rs 10,000 for holding more than one PAN. A wrong date of birth is always a correction to your existing PAN, never a fresh application.
I corrected PAN but linking with Aadhaar still fails. Why?
Often a database sync delay. Wait a couple of weeks after approval before retrying. If it still fails after that, confirm what each portal actually holds rather than comparing the printed cards.
Questions and answers

Frequently Asked Questions About PAN Date Correction

How do I correct the date of birth on my PAN card in Karnataka?
File a PAN correction application online through the official PAN service portal of the Income Tax Department, select the date of birth field, enter the correct date, and upload a valid proof such as a birth certificate, matriculation certificate, or passport. The corrected PAN card usually arrives within about one to two weeks.
Should I correct PAN or Aadhaar first?
Often PAN first. Aadhaar usually allows a date of birth update only once, while PAN can be corrected online more easily. So correct PAN to match your base record, then use the single Aadhaar update to align.
Does my PAN number change after correction?
No. A date of birth correction keeps your existing PAN number. A fresh PAN card is issued with the same number and the corrected date, so your tax history stays intact.
What proof is accepted for PAN date of birth?
A valid proof of date of birth, such as a birth certificate, matriculation or 10th certificate, passport, Aadhaar with the correct date, or a driving licence carrying the date. The birth certificate is the strongest.
My Aadhaar and PAN show different dates. What do I do?
Decide the correct date from your base record, then align both. Since Aadhaar allows only one update, it is often safer to correct PAN first, then update Aadhaar to match, so the two agree.
Is a court order needed for a PAN date change?
Usually not. PAN is corrected online against a valid proof of date of birth. A court order is more relevant for a birth certificate or marks card change, which then serves as the proof for PAN.
